Restaurants in the 4th arrondissement, from the islands to Bastille
Think of the 4th as three zones: the islands, with Notre-Dame and the Île Saint-Louis; the Hôtel de Ville and Pompidou area; and the southern Marais, from rue des Rosiers to Place des Vosges. They're all within a short walk of each other, so the map above is your best tool: tap a zone, check what's open, go. Budget-wise, the 4th leans expensive, but the cheap end is excellent.
On the Île Saint-Louis
Berthillon has made ice cream and sorbets on the island since 1954; salted butter caramel and gianduja are the classics, and weekday mornings mean shorter queues. For dinner, Le Sergent Recruteur is a Michelin-starred table run by Alain Pégouret, formerly of Laurent, known for lobster and a black truffle egg mousseline. More cones on our ice cream page.
Stars, from grand to tiny
The 4th has a lot of Michelin stars for its size. L'Ambroisie holds three and still serves à la carte, feuillantine de langoustines included. Benoit Paris keeps the soul of a 1912 bistrot under its star. H, in the Bastille area, seats fewer than twenty for Hubert Duchenne's inventive menus. See every Michelin 1-star restaurant in Paris.
Brasseries and big appetites
Bofinger, founded in 1864, serves choucroute garnie and seafood platters under its Belle Époque glass dome. Bistrot des Tournelles, between Place des Vosges and Bastille, is the place for mushrooms in persillade, roast farm chicken and baba au rhum. Craving the classics? Try our seafood platters and traditional restaurants.
Cheap, fast and very good
L'As du Fallafel and Miznon cover the pita front for very little. Comme à Lisbonne serves warm pastéis de nata in a ten-seat shop, and Eataly fills a huge Italian food hall with pasta and pizza. More in our cheap eats, or cross the bridge to the Latin Quarter in the 5th arrondissement.
