How to shop at gourmet food shops in Paris
In a good shop, the staff want you to taste. Tell the cheesemonger when you plan to eat the cheese and they'll pick one at the right ripeness; if it's flying home with you, ask whether they can vacuum-pack it. Many independent shops close on Sunday afternoon and Monday, so check the opening hours with the filters above, then use the map to build a shopping loop.
Cheese, the main event
La Fromagerie Goncourt, in the 11th and the 17th, specializes in raw-milk cheeses from small producers, labels where each one comes from and will help you build a platter: try the tomme au foin or the truffled Saint-Marcellin. Fromagerie Quatrehomme, Laurent Dubois and Crèmerie Delacour are on the list too. Monbleu, near Faubourg Montmartre, is a cheese shop you can eat in, with 36-month Comté and raclette on weekdays only. Melted cheese fans should also see our raclette and fondue picks.
Ham, meat and a sandwich to go
Near the Marché des Enfants Rouges, Caractère de Cochon builds its jambon-beurre from house-cured hams such as Noir de Bigorre or wild-garlic ham; come before 12:30 or after 2pm to skip the crowd. In the 11th, Bidoche is a responsible butcher by day and a hidden table d'hôte from Tuesday to Saturday evenings, grilling French meats by weight; book ahead. Maison Verot is on the list too. More in our sandwiches and terrines.
The big food halls
When you want everything under one roof, go big. La Grande Épicerie on rue de Sèvres has truffles, foie gras and aged cheeses; weekday mornings are calmest. Galeries Lafayette Gourmet fills the Haussmann store's ground floor with more than 20,000 products, and Eataly brings 7,000 Italian products and seven restaurants to the Marais, a good warm-up for our Italian restaurants.
Tea, coffee and where to look
Kodama Tiquetonne pours ceremonial-grade matcha with homemade pastries, and Mariage Frères and Belleville Brûlerie are on the list too. The 11th has the most gourmet food shops here, so start with the 11th arrondissement, then walk through Le Marais. Expect upmarket prices, and for produce at street level, see our food markets. Open any shop for its specialties, prices and the good and not-so-good from reviews.
