Where to eat in Montmartre and the 18th
The 18th is much bigger than the hill. Montmartre gets the crowds, but the arrondissement also runs down to Pigalle, east to La Chapelle and the Goutte d'Or, and north to residential streets visitors never see. Prices here are spread evenly, from a street-food lunch to a tasting menu, so set your budget in the filters first, then switch to the map to see what's on your way.
Bistros on the slopes
Rue Lepic is your friend. Le Coq & Fils is Antoine Westermann's poultry bistro: heritage breeds from small farms, a proper coq au vin, roast chicken with œuf mayo. On the same street, brothers Nicolas and Julien Durand run Chantoiseau, where a flaky wood pigeon pie meets natural wine; go for the weekday lunch, since it's closed on weekends. At Le Maquis, André Le Letty, a former sous-chef at La Tour d'Argent, serves canard au sang in two courses, a dish few Paris kitchens still dare to cook. Signature Montmartre, on rue des Trois-Frères, runs Franco-Korean tasting menus in a small, calm room. More in our French restaurants and the best coq au vin in town.
Cheap and cheerful below the hill
Bouillon Pigalle seats 300 over two floors near the Moulin Rouge and serves onion soup and bœuf bourguignon at prices from another century. The pre-show crowd packs it between 6:30 and 8 pm, so come earlier or later and ask for the balcony. Gemüse bakes its own pide bread for Berlin-style kebabs in a room of about ten seats. Le Ruisseau grills burgers from French farm-raised beef, with a veggie version of every one. See our onion soup and burgers picks for more.
Terraces, breakfast and one Place du Tertre exception
La Recyclerie turned a former Petite Ceinture railway station into a café-canteen with an urban farm and a big garden terrace; arrive when service starts to get a seat outside. At Halle Pajol, Bob's Bake Shop bakes pies and bagels every morning from 8 am, a solid breakfast stop. And yes, one address on Place du Tertre made our cut: Chez Eugène cooks homemade, seasonal food with natural wines and stays open late, every day. For more outdoor tables, browse our restaurants with a terrace, and check the restaurants open on Sunday before a weekend on the hill.
